Verbal De-Escalation for Corrections
Hosted by the Galveston County Sheriff's Office
De-escalation in a corrections facility is a one-day class and is crucial in jails for several reasons. Firstly, it prioritizes safety. By calming tense situations, staff can avoid injuries to themselves, inmates, and bystanders. This reduces the need for force, minimizing physical and psychological harm.
Secondly, de-escalation fosters a more positive environment. When inmates feel heard and respected, they’re less likely to become disruptive. This creates a calmer atmosphere for everyone, improving quality of life for both staff and inmates.
Finally, de-escalation can open channels for communication. When inmates feel understood, it allows staff to address underlying issues that might be fueling tensions. This can help prevent future outbreaks and promote a sense of order.
Incarceration is a stressful experience. De-escalation offers a way to navigate these tensions, creating a safer and more productive environment for everyone involved.
