36th Annual TJA Conference • May 2–6, 2022 • San Marcos, Texas

Welcome to the
36th Annual TJA Conference

36th Annual Conference Attendees,

The Texas Jail Association is excited to host the Annual Conference in San Marcos for the first time in the Association’s history. We look forward to a wonderful week. Thank you to Sheriff Gary Cutler and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office for all of their assistance and support.

On Monday, we will host the Annual Jerry Baggs Memorial Golf Tournament at the Landa Park Golf Course in the beautiful city of New Braunfels. That evening, we will host our first annual BBQ fundraiser in the Embassy Suites parking lot, with proceeds going to the Jack Crump Scholarship.

This year's training sessions will include a variety of topics, such as, leadership, officer wellness, recruiting and retention, what to expect during an inspection, and many more. Additionally, these sessions will provide solutions and strategies to equip conference attendees with ideas and resources that can be implemented at their jails, institutions, and organizations.

We encourage you to use the TJA conference app to access information about training sessions, conference events, speaker bios, and to play the exhibit hall game. You will receive push notifications throughout the conference and event notices from the app. If you need assistance with the app, please find one of the board members and we will assist you.

We are excited to have Doug Dretke, Executive Director of the Correctional Management Institute of Texas (CMIT), as our opening speaker. He is a 26-year veteran of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a SHSU alumnus. During his tenure with TDCJ, Dretke built strong working relationships with state and national leaders. His life-long field experience gives him insight on the issues and challenges corrections leaders are facing today. Dretke has a passion for leadership development and has overseen the development of many new leadership trainings during his tenure with CMIT.

Lastly, one of the most exciting parts of attending a conference is the opportunity to network with your peers. This week, be sure to thank the exhibitors who support our Association and make it possible for us to host many extra events. The TJA Board welcomes you, and we are here to help. We have some exciting, fun foods for the President’s lunch, several nights of cornhole, a delicious meal planned for the banquet and the Cody Widner band will play Thursday night. We wish all attendees a fantastic week of learning and fellowship. We hope you leave the conference with more knowledge and many new friends!

Sincerely,

Ricky Armstrong Signature
